The Citizen Eco-Drive EYES which was first unveiled at Basel World in 2010 has finally gone on sale. The EYES has been released as a limited edition timepiece which comes in two colours black and white. There are only 250 of each colour available in the world. It is also the world’s first watch to feature a 3D ceramic dial.

The design of the watch is based on the idea of “Light and Shadow” using traditional Japanese aesthetics to utilise natural lighting and depth of shadow in order to emphasise the surface of the dial. Light doesn’t just play an important part ascetically but also practically as it features Citizen’s famous Eco-Drive technology powering the watch using any light source available. This helps to accentuate the watches theme of how natural light affects the way the human eye perceives light and dimensions.
The watch dial has been made from a high grade ceramic which is the ideal material for a watch focusing on the concept of light and shadows. Ceramic can be fragile but Citizen have created a state of the art precision processing technique which enables them to make ceramic dials like never before. The use of a dome shaped sapphire crystal in the watches construction is inspired by classical botanical architecture and undergoes a meticulous polishing process to help ensure the watch is able to absorb light from every angle. There are also 13 ceramic indexes which have been designed to extend the shadow they cast on the dial surface. This idea of casting shadows across the dial surface has been inspired by modern skyscrapers and iconic monuments like Stonehenge.

The watch strap has bee constructed from a soft liquid rubber which adheres to the contours of the wearer’s wrist. The design highlights the design features of the watch case. The strap on the white edition of the EYES has been coated with a special coating in order to make it highly resistant to dirt and marks.
The one downside of the watch is that it takes 80 times longer to make due to the processes required to make the ceramic parts of the timepiece. However it also meant that only the highest quality ceramic parts made it into the finished product as only those which passed stringent inspections were used during manufacture. The watch body and case were constructed individually with the fine details highly polished.
When the EYES was first unveiled at Basel World back in 2010 it attracted a lot of attention for its simplicity and the technical design required to make the watch a reality.
The EYES are limited to 250 pieces each worldwide and will retail at around £3000.

Super Future Kid (formerly known as Cake) is more visible than the elusive Banksy, but still prefers to work under an assumed name. Born in Germany and now living in London, she creates a whimsical, almost surreal world, which evokes childhood fantasies while referencing modern culture.

Her work evokes the spirit of both Dali and Warhole. Dali in the sense that she typical uses photo-realistic images in a completely surreal way, for example in her work White Shadows, a totally realistic shark floats in the air above a winter scene, which in itself contains a realistic modern figure, painted with their back to the view along with two human characters who look like they have stepped straight out of a fairy tale and a pop-art influenced reindeer.

Warhole’s influence is shown most strongly in her easy and imaginative referencing of contemporary pop culture along with a reworking of more traditional images. For example in Stay Puft the key figure in the scene is the infamous Marshmallow Man from the original Ghostbusters film. The supporting figures are three cats painted to resemble the three flying ducks formerly viewed as interior design standards and now as retro kitsch. Behind them is a stylized owl, referencing spiritualism.

Although Super Future Kid tends to steer clear of overt political statements, she is perfectly willing to rise to the challenge of dealing with controversial issues in her paintings. In Wonder Vacation a women in a white dress and veil, clearly reminiscent of the Virgin Mary holds a lamb (to the viewer’s left) and a malnourished dark-skinned infant with dull eyes (to the viewer’s right). A shopping bag dangles from her left hand. While the top part of the background is mainly black, the bottom part is filled with splashes of color. Some of the blobs could be human heads, but this is left to the viewer to decide.

Much of Super Future Kid’s work demands the viewer put their own input into the painting. For example The Future is Bright features a white dog (similar to a Staffordshire Bull Terrier), floating in the air because it is attached to black balloons. To the right of the dog there is a male figure wearing a Mexican sombrero hat and holding a garden fork (not a pitch fork). His face is white with black markings and he has black hair. It is unclear whether these are natural or whether he is wearing make-up. To the right of him, there is the seated figure of an attractive woman wearing a medieval-style long, pointed hat and holding an orange bucket, painted with a face like a Hallow’een pumpkin. In the background there is a multi-coloured planet surrounded by rings. Different viewers could interpret this work as a piece of whimsy, a comment on youth culture or a referencing of different forms of spiritual values. There might be even more potential interpretations.

© Super Future Kid

Super Future Kid’s attractive combination of creativity, wit and intelligence have made her works increasingly popular and respected. He has been exhibited in the same collections as Damien Hirst and Tracy Emin and his works are steadily increasing in value. At current time, his paintings are still within the reach of amateur collectors, who can buy her original paintings online at Saatchinoline.

The first wrist watch was made by Swiss watch maker Patek Phillippe for a Hungarian Countess in 1868. Despite being designed to tell the time its primary function was to be first and foremost a piece of decorative jewellery for the countess to show off. It may be a 145 years since Phillippe designed that timepiece but the idea of watches being a piece of decorative jewellery hasn’t changed. Watches have never been just about telling the time but a reflective statement about who you are and your style.

The only difference between the Countess’s watch and watches today is fashions ever changing tastes in design and aesthetics, because of this very few watches ever remain truly timeless but there are a few exceptions to this rule. The first is the Hamilton Ventura. The American watchmakers created the Ventura in 1957, it was the world’s first mass market battery powered watch. To accompany this technological marvel the company asked industrial designer Richard Arbib to design the now infamous asymmetrical sold 14k gold case which reflected the 1950’s design aesthetics. The Ventura had changed the face of watch design forever.

In the 70’s and 80’s came the trend for digital watches and with it the desire to combine technology and design. A prime example of this was the Citizen scientific calculator watch 49-9421. Unlike Casio’s attempts this watch was the height of geek chic with its focus on design and functioning technology. The Citizen was more than just a calculator watch it was a scientific calculator watch, with 40 buttons surrounding the dial enabling wearers to make a variety of scientific calculations any where at any time. The Citizen is considered the holy grail of calculator watches for collectors.

Now in the 21st century you wouldn’t think there is much in the way of innovation left for the humble wrist watch, but you’d be wrong. Step forward Ressence with their new Type 3 watch. They have taken the design aesthetics pioneered by Ventura and the technology driven ideas of Casio and Citizen to a whole new level, thus dragging the analogue wrist watch kicking and screaming into the 21st century with just a few simple tweaks.

Between the watch face and the inside surface Belgian designer Benoit Mintiens has filled the space with a clear refractive fluid. This makes the watch face resemble a magic 8 ball inspired high end timepiece. Another break from tradition is the lack of hands, the watch instead uses engraved discs which rotate to line up with the numbers on the on the rings surrounding them in order to tell the time.

Along with the revolutionary design there is also a revolution in the materials used to construct the piece; the majority of the watch is made up of titanium. The only exceptions to this being the sapphire crystal and 28 gears. Ressence has also come up with a unique way of winding the watch instead of a crown it features nested rings built into the back of the watch which the wearer twists to set the time. The Ressence is truly a timeless watch.

Inspired by nature, its stability is based on its specific diamond structure. Stress gets distributed across the whole structure. A principle, that also applies to geodesic domes and that we use for our tents.
